EXPLANATION OF TIERS: PHYSICIANS/ADVANCED PRACTICE CLINICIANS

Tier One
The first tier is the acquisition of the necessary knowledge base to assess for neoplasia of the lower genital tract. This is gained through either an ACCME- accredited colposcopy course or a U.S.-accredited residency program. Included in this web page is all the necessary documentation required of the Mentee and Mentor to register for the program. This can be found in the getting started section on the Mentorship Program homepage.

Acceptable accredited courses include the ASCCP Comprehensive Colposcopy courses, as well as those programs offered by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Indian Health Service, University of Texas Southwestern Nurse Practitioner Program, Education Program Associates, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (Philadelphia program), and Emory University. Other courses may qualify as well. If you are planning to take a course that is not listed please call Ms. Ann Powell at the national office at 1-800-787-7227 or email apowell@asccp.org.

Tier Two
The second tier is the actual mentorship training period in which the beginning colposcopist performs colposcopic examinations and deduces cytologic, colposcopic, and histologic correlation under the guidance of an experienced Mentor. This tier may be conducted in a private practice or clinic setting or in a U.S.-accredited residency program.

Important points to remember:
  • The Mentee must perform and document a minimum of 25 consecutive supervised colposcopic examinations on women with Pap smear results of ASC/AGC or more severe to achieve a basic level of proficiency as determined by the Mentor. NOTE: It is expected that the Mentee will see and submit documentation of at least 3 cases with high-grade findings (e.g., CIN 2/3 by biopsy). Of the 25 cases there should be a minimum of 12 with cervical biopsies and 4 with endocervical curettage (ECC) procedures with sufficient cells for diagnosis.  If, after performing 25 supervised exams the Mentee has not met these minimum criteria, it is expected that the Mentee will continue in the program until the minimum of 3 high-grade cases, 12 cervical biopsies, and 4 endocervical curettage procedures are met. The Mentor should be present in the room during all colposcopy exams.

  • Mentee may not begin the Mentorship Program until having received a registration confirmation letter from the ASCCP National Office. No retroactive exams will be counted.

  • When the minimum colposcopic examinations and paperwork are completed, mail three copies of the documentation to the ASCCP National Office. Those conducting their mentorship training through the Indian Health Service, University of Texas Southwestern Nurse Practitioner Program, Education Program Associates, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (Philadelphia Program), or Emory University should have their program director provide a confirmation cover letter in addition to the documentation.
